Article “We accompany with the person that we are”, F. Javier Romeo, for the initiative “Renewing from within”

Portada del artículo "Acompañamos con la persona que somos" de F. Javier RomeoThe pandemic has brought us many difficult things, and I wish it hadn't happened. And even so we can use their symbols to have a greater awareness about our way of being with children, and adolescents who have suffered much, as is the case with those who live with protection measures.

The initiative “Renewing from within”, from which we already talked about its launch in May 2021, aims to offer some ideas to continue reflecting on the protection system in Spain (and can also be used for many other places). My contribution this month is article “We accompany with the person that we are”, in which I offer a series of analogies between measures against COVID-19 and the awareness we need when dealing with children, girls and adolescents with protection measures. It is aimed at professionals and families of all kinds (originally, cozy, adoptivas…).

You can read the article in the blog of “Renewing from within”, from where you can also download it in PDF.

And I would love to know if those metaphors serve you, or how would you raise them from your point of view. I will read you carefully.

Guide “Affection, limits and consciousness” Oven Pepa and F. Javier Romeo SOS in Latin America

We have been several years accompanying the work of SOS Children's Villages in Latin America and the Caribbean through its International Office for the region and some national offices. Is a fascinating project being brave and innovative approaches SOS Children's Villages is taking, and for us is being honored advise them in their processes.

One of the most recent results is the Guide Affection, limits and consciousness. Positive Discipline in the programs of SOS Children's Villages, published in 2017, we have written Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo with contributions from dozens of professionals from multiple countries in the region, and coordination team of the International Office for the region. It has been a very interesting process going translating into concrete and applicable ideas professionals and families from countries as diverse as educate from this model. We present it well:

“Seeks to promote positive discipline and self-consciousness in us, grown ups, to generate deep and abiding emotional bonds with children, we educate girls and adolescents. We understand education as a long-term process in which we must achieve to provide life skills to children, and adolescents and make them feel secure and recognized” (p. 6)

From there we explained our version model positive discipline (chapter 2) and differentiate between limit and violence (chapter 3). Here we explore how our experience as families and educators shapes our way of educating (chapter 4), and once we know that our basic tool for education is how we are and behave, our own person, We propose how to accompany children, and adolescents combining affection and firmness (chapter 5). Last, We offer some clues to address some everyday situations (chapter 6), to provide guidance for many other. And we close the book with some questions worth asking (chapter 7), because for us there are no magic recipes, but consciousness-making processes, to be caring and continuously expand.

We want to thank the participation of so many people from so many countries to achieve a comprehensive and useful guide. And we also send special thanks to Valeria Losoviz, who has formated guide carefully for easy reading and quick reference, and Bruno Coppola, for those illustrations full of life.

We hope this guide will provide new ideas for you to continue thinking, both for professional practice in protective environments such as families.

Interview with F. Javier Romeo on “Focusing and working experientially violence” from the International Focusing Institute

conversation_javier_romeo-biedma_tifi_2016

In November, the interview appeared in which I commented on "Focusing and how to work experientially with issues of violence" (“Focusing and how to work experientially with violence”). Protection against violence in childhood and adolescence is one of the main themes of Spiral Consulting Children, as you know those who follow our work.

The International Focusing Institute (The International Focusing Institute, the organization that coordinates international activities related to training and dissemination of Focusing, and he has certified me as a trainer and as Focusing Focusing Oriented Psychotherapist) promotes "Conversations" (English) Focusing professionals from around the world in the most innovative aspects, with the idea of spreading the progress and inspire new fields of action. Serge Prengel, A trainer and psychotherapist Focusing Focusing Oriented who met in the Focusing International Conference 2016 Cambridge (United Kingdom), acts as the host, and you can see the style that uses Focusing: with active listening through empathic reflection, with ample breaks, allowing new ideas and to unfold at its own pace.

In this "conversation" going to be able to hear such topics as:

  • Violence as a stopped process ("Something had to have happened to carry out the situation, but it did not happen, so that the process is blocked ").
  • Damage defines violence, and the damage is experienced from the body.
  • Finding a "handle" (“handle”) for violence (identify) It is the first step out of it: this requires becoming aware of the cultural patterns that make us normalize violence.
  • The role of power in violence.
  • The attached affection care as a way to avoid violence (and body dimension that can be achieved by focusing).
  • Detection and intervention in cases of violence in Protecting Children.
  • A message of hope about the possibilities to heal and transform violence, and Focusing as a great tool for doing.

And if you want to experience how to transform the experience of violence from the body by Focusing, I'm available for specific sessions or Psychotherapy in Madrid (you can contact me directly).

I hope you find it of interest, and I will love to hear your reactions to it.

The toolbox that children themselves can play ... and manage us

kit_proteccion_educoLast 13 September 2016 Educo He launched a set of awareness materials, the Educo protection kit, with the aim that people adult, children acquire tools to prevent and recognize the different situations of violence towards children and, if, to follow some basic guidelines on how to react and where and who to ask for appropriate help depending on the situation.

This toolbox, aimed at both people who have contact with children, especially families with children from 6 a 9 years or 10 a 12 years, as the children themselves, He explains in straightforward language and stripped of technicalities the basics of such a complex issue as is the violence towards children. The different materials that make up the kit provide the necessary keys for your readers to build together an environment of coexistence based on mutual respect and affection and know how to react to a revelation or suspected case of violence against a child.

The kit consists of three boxes of materials. Especially designed for those readers who come into contact for the first time this subject, this division is not based on technical criteria but responds to the will of users to manage the different parts with ease and find the necessary information at all times quickly.

The first case focuses on positive emotional education and conflict resolution. Your guides insist on the priority of building with children with a solid emotional foundation to sit on security and know that you will always find listen out, understanding and support in their trusted adults and care. constantly stressing the importance of adults have a positive parenting in which limits and tenderness They go hand in hand, This section provides recommendations on how educate the emotions of children (and own) in order to relate to others professing and demanding respect.

The second case describes the various forms of violence towards children. Their manuals are aimed to provide guidelines for children to learn to identify situations of violence and to develop strategies appropriate to seek help and know who to ask for it. The families, educators and care figures find prevention measures simple while effective, key to teaching children self-protection guidelines and indications of how messages react, a who and where to go where appropriate.

the third box is dedicated to bullying and cyberbullying. In addition to describing its features and offer prevention and detection key, two fundamental messages are transmitted: all children involved in a case of peer violence need support and specific actions and is essential to ensure that children develop ability to establish friendly relations with their peers and to help other children in their environment who are suffering.

The kit has a fun design and handy format that favors rapid and daily consultation. It contains a cooperative board game, children's stories with their respective reading guide, manuals and guides aimed at adults or younger readers with explanations, recommendations, activities and posters with messages and phone numbers help to hang in a conspicuous place of the commonplaces of the house, the room the child or for a ride on the agenda or backpack.

Live free from all forms of violence is a right for children but also a necessary condition to achieve their full development. This depends mainly on the adults responsible for their protection and care exercise their functions upbringing and education exerting a culture of good deal, protection to children and promoting their autonomy.

Spiral Consulting Children He has been working for years for the full protection of all children, and adolescents by promoting the development of safe environments and spaces of good affective treatment for children. Thus, applauds any initiative, How is it going, It aims to raise awareness on the prevention of all forms of violence against children as responsibility of everyone and instil that culture of good treatment inviting people to spend more time with children to relate to them with affection and respect.

It has been for me a real pleasure to contribute my grain of sand in the development of this toolbox on aspects that have to do with the prevention, detection and intervention in cases of violence towards children. If there is anything worth mentioning the spirit of these materials it is the will to explain in simple language serious issues that concern families and care figures and push through the proposed activities, stories and games table active participation and processing capacity of children in the dynamics of their relations with their environment.

Thus, I can recommend that families and educators figures have at home, in the classroom or living space protection kit Educo as a common everyday briefcase available to everyone and that children can manipulate without fear of getting hurt: their tools help avoid.
