Article “Defining consciousness” by Pepa Horno for the initiative “Renewing from within”

One of the pillars of the CI Spirals philosophy is the generation of networks. Networking makes you grow as a professional and as a person. But then there are networks and networks. From time to time you get the gift of being in a work group with professionals whom you often feel are better than you., professionals who challenge you, they drive you, urge you. Over the years I have learned that they not only have to be professionals who I admire for their professional level. They have to be people who I admire for their human qualities, its warmth, his honesty and something even rarer: for their ability to be generous with their time and knowledge. How difficult it is to find professionals who share what they do and how they do it, that they understand that sharing as we understand it in CI Spirals, as our way of bringing back to life as much as we have received.

The group of professionals “Renewing from within” is included among this group of professionals, those that make me a better person and a better professional. Because then we started talking and, like nothing, you end up committing to a little madness, nothing more and nothing less, to try to define what it is “consciousness”. That word mantra that has become the cornerstone of our professional intervention, but also from my look at the human being and his possibility of change from freedom.

So here I share the link to the article that has resulted from that challenge. It is called “Defining consciousness”. I have tried to develop the indicators that I use to differentiate a look, a conscious intervention in the educational role, foster or care. Indicators that can also be used in a process of improvement of professional quality and organizational change.

I hope I don't come off too badly off the result. And above all, as always, I hope it can be useful to you.

Article “We accompany with the person that we are”, F. Javier Romeo, for the initiative “Renewing from within”

Portada del artículo "Acompañamos con la persona que somos" de F. Javier RomeoThe pandemic has brought us many difficult things, and I wish it hadn't happened. And even so we can use their symbols to have a greater awareness about our way of being with children, and adolescents who have suffered much, as is the case with those who live with protection measures.

The initiative “Renewing from within”, from which we already talked about its launch in May 2021, aims to offer some ideas to continue reflecting on the protection system in Spain (and can also be used for many other places). My contribution this month is article “We accompany with the person that we are”, in which I offer a series of analogies between measures against COVID-19 and the awareness we need when dealing with children, girls and adolescents with protection measures. It is aimed at professionals and families of all kinds (originally, cozy, adoptivas…).

You can read the article in the blog of “Renewing from within”, from where you can also download it in PDF.

And I would love to know if those metaphors serve you, or how would you raise them from your point of view. I will read you carefully.

“The look at the educational space: a proposal of indicators to evaluate nursery schools as safe and protective environments”: Pepa Horno's article in the Aula de Infantil magazine

The focus of protection work has changed in recent years, moving from understanding protection as the eradication of any form of violence against children, girls and adolescents to a comprehensive model that includes protection as the generation of a safe and protective environment that guarantees the full development of the child. And the full development of a child goes far beyond their right not to suffer any form of violence..

From this understanding, the look at the environment changes. The environment becomes a constitutive element of the intervention we do in any field. The intervention is a relational experience that is also determined by the place where it takes place. The place where we are gives meaning to the intervention. And that said environment is safe and protective becomes the essential condition to guarantee the protection of children, and adolescents.

Thus, from CI Spirals we have been promoting a indicator model that serve to evaluate the environments where children live, girls and adolescents to know if they are safe and protective environments, as well as to promote the changes and improvements necessary to achieve that. Their homes, the schools, the leisure spaces, the spaces of the municipality, the sport zones, health centers and hospitals, the protection homes, spaces for social intervention, the police stations or the courts, among many others, are spaces that must be evaluated from this perspective.

Portada de la Revista Aula de Infantil, 111, septiembre 2021Article “The look at the educational space: a proposal of indicators to evaluate nursery schools as safe and protective spaces” that has been published in the Aula de Infantil Magazine this September 2021, develops this system of indicators focused on nursery schools. The objective is to provide those responsible for the management and direction of nursery schools with a system of indicators that allow them to evaluate those that already exist and incorporate them into the design of those that are planned in the future..

This system of indicators generates what is most important to us: a conscious look at space as part of an inclusive and protective educational process. I hope that the article that we disseminate today can be a useful tool to generate that look.

“Beyond survival. How to improve the intervention in Europe with unaccompanied and separated migrant children who are left outside the protection system”, by F. Javier Romeo and Pepa Horno for UNICEF

[Read the English version clicking here.]

Unaccompanied and separated migrant children face multiple difficulties. Like boys and girls, they are not usually heard. As immigrants, it is often considered that “they have fewer rights. Like boys and girls without affective references, they have to face the lack of protection on the part of the institutions that should protect them. And as boys and girls who are left outside the protection system and who can sometimes resort to any way of life to survive, they are often the target of hate speech and narratives that dehumanize them. But, We need to remember that they are boys and girls who have suffered adverse experiences and who deserve safe interventions that guarantee their human rights.

As a contribution to consolidate solid interventions and respectful narratives, We are proud to present this document that we have prepared from Espirales Consultoría de Infancia:

Although the two of us, F. Javier Romeo and Pepa Horno we are its authors, This publication tries to collect all the findings of the International Workshop that took place in Madrid in December 2019, that Javier helped facilitate. We had the contributions of specialists from Spain, French, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Netherlands and Sweden in Europe and Morocco in Africa. We also have the coordination of UNICEF Spain and UNICEF France, with the support of UNICEF's PFP Division. Our thanks for everything you shared., for their knowledge and for their experience. We hope the document will honor your generosity and commitment..

We have structured the text with three goals in mind, each of which is addressed in a chapter:

  1. Be clear about the “Fundamental principles and main risks faced by unaccompanied and separated children living on the street”.
  2. Get a complete perspective on a “Call to action: towards an integrative model of intervention for the care and protection of unaccompanied boys and girls living on the street”, exploring four levels of intervention (address legal and documentation aspects; promote and develop safe and protective environments; provide affective references to boys and girls; and build new narratives with and about unaccompanied migrant children living on the street).
  3. Provide inspiration through “Selected positive practices”, a compilation of specific interventions and programs that have worked at each of the levels proposed in the Chapter 2.

We hope that this document will help professionals and activists to develop new narratives and increasingly comprehensive interventions.. In this way, it will be possible to ensure that these children have full access to their rights., as the title says, beyond survival.

F. Javier Romeo and Pepa Horno
