“Psychic trauma belongs to everyone”, new book by Begoña Aznarez with the foreword by Pepa Horno

Portada del libro "El trauma psíquico es de todos" Aznárez BegoñaOne of the pillars of the CI Spirals philosophy since its creation was the construction of networks. Link people, to professional teams with each other. The network is a security condition, legitimacy and technical rigor as well as human care.

Since that construction of networks we have met extraordinary people and professionals that we have admired. And life in some cases has offered me the privilege of being able to generate a deep emotional bond with some of them.. And so you don't just admire them professionally, but you love them. Begoña Aznárez is one of those examples.

Begoña is a therapist who is creating a school. Not just for the people you serve, but through all the professionals he is training and accompanying from the Spanish Society of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychology (SEMPyP). It has an unusual characteristic in our guild which is the ability to make complex things simple., to explain in a simple way the great technical concepts of psychology. In this way, manages to make them close and understandable not only for professionals, but for families and children, girls and adolescents with whom we work. His human congruence and his ability to structure the therapeutic process are unique. The book Psychic trauma belongs to everyone is a perfect example of this ability. In it, he develops a technical model for dealing with trauma in childhood and adolescence, shaping it into a series of lessons.. But it goes further, making children's trauma visible, girls and adolescents as a community responsibility. Hence its title.

The concept of “trauma” It is essential for any professional who wants to work with rigor and technical updating in the field of protection. The knowledge and advances that trauma psychology has entailed in the intervention requires professionals who want to carry out their work efficiently to train on trauma. From Espirales CI we are promoting this training and a whole series of materials on this subject, starting with the manual Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence what has developed F. Javier Romeo. That is why receiving a book like the one published this week by Begoña is a gift.

But the gift was double. Because Begoña asked me to write the foreword to this book. An honor for me as a professional, but above all as a person. So I end this post by literally transcribing the prologue that I wrote, in the confidence that it encourages you to read a book that gives light far beyond the professional.

The prologue goes like this:

“Those of us who work with people know that the effectiveness of what we do depends not so much on what we do as on the way we do it. It is to a large extent the way in which we carry out our work that marks its effectiveness. The better professional is not the one who knows the most, but the one who is able to find a simple and clear way of explaining the processes and approaching them effectively.. All the more so when it comes to the human soul and its pain.

There are many of us who have been waiting for this book for years. Longing for Begoña to find enough time and peace to write it. Because she combines that "what" with a luminous "how". But his patients always went before, each soul and its history, each trauma and its imprint, each boy or girl and their magic.

Begoña is one of the best professionals I have ever met. José Luis [Marin] would say, in that polarized style that Begoña likes so much, which is the best. And she has been a teacher and guide to more professionals than she can imagine.. That is why writing this foreword is in itself an honor and a gift.. She knows that I have dedicated my professional life to giving a voice to people whose trauma stories have made them mute., to break that silence of which he speaks from the beginning. And it was partly thanks to her.

But Begoña is something else: she is a magician and flies. That is why when you start reading the pages of this book you get a feeling of disbelief.. It seems impossible to describe the complex in such a simple way and to name suffering in such a bright and courageous way.. When you advance in its reading you will realize that its pages are leaving you without excuses: as a therapist to incorporate their technical proposal into your work and as a person to watch or revisit your own narrative.

It is quite a challenge that Begoña proposes: talk about trauma both to people outside the psychotherapeutic field but who know the trauma (conscious or unconsciously) and will be recognized in many passages of the book as professionals of psychology and medicine. She says it clear: "What heals is the bond". And through the pages she guides us sensitively, synchrony and presence.

This book generates explicit semantic memory on more than one level. And it mentalizes the intuitions and “gut” sensations that many of us have had throughout our professional career.. Break the silence. And for those of us who have had the privilege of listening to Begoña in training sessions or conferences, it is quite a re-experiment, almost like listening to her. These pages develop a therapeutic approach to intervening with people with stories of trauma.. There is little literature that describes the technical models of intervention in such a way that they can be generalized. We need to ensure that psychology and medicine professionals are able to read the history of trauma behind the emotional symptoms, behavioral and somatic. That conscious gaze that allows you to see the horror, fear and the courage of survival.

Because let me finish this prologue by choosing my lesson. I choose the 48. The vacuum, the horror, the value, healing. I have rarely read a summary that better honors all the people who have found their unique way, own and brave to heal your trauma history. And the light that comes to us when in the lesson 52 speaks to us of that "healthy and wise bond with ourselves"… that we see appear in the soul, the eyes, people's actions and smiles in the therapeutic context. The one that gives meaning to what we do. That what, hopefully, we achieve with our inner child”.

Little more can I add. Except, again: thanks, Begoña.

Book “Putting soul to pain. Therapeutic intervention with children, girls and adolescents victims of child sexual abuse” coordinated by Pepa Horno

Portada del libro "Poniendo alma al dolor"Technical supervision is a unique learning space, not only for those who receive it but for those who supervise. In recent years since CI Spirals We have the privilege of supervising teams of professionals from different areas of the protection system. The objective is to improve the quality of the intervention from the professional's awareness process. A space in which cases are discussed, but above all from the internal experience of each professional and as a team.

In these spaces we meet incredible professionals. Professionals with a great technical background, but above all with an inestimable human quality and a commitment to the pain of the people they serve difficult to match. This is the case of Elena González, Carolina Moniño and Carmen Ruiz, psychologists of the UTASI, The Therapeutic Unit for Child Sexual Abuse who created the Directorate General of Children, Youth and Families of the Government of the Balearic Islands to take care of the children, girls and adolescents victims of sexual abuse and with protective families.

Within the framework of this supervision, the project for this book arose, Putting soul to pain. Therapeutic intervention with children, girls and adolescents victims of child sexual abuse, which has just been published by the editorial Desclée De Brouwer. Again we thank the editorial Desclée De Brouwer its commitment to the publication and dissemination of works aimed at improving technical interventions from psychology.

In recent years, many publications on child sexual abuse have been developed in our country. But very few describe the therapeutic process for caring for children, girls and adolescents victims of sexual abuse. We are not referring to a technical manual on areas to address or understanding abuse, but to a detailed description of HOW to approach it. A description of the process that is followed in the consultation from the first day the child arrives, girl or adolescent until closing session. With enough detail to allow it to be replicated by other professionals in various contexts. Professionals who work, being or not aware of it, with children, girls and adolescents victims of child sexual abuse. For this reason, from CI Spirals we recommend reading it to all professionals who work in the protection system, but not only, also to any therapist who works with children, and adolescents.

Putting soul to pain also has a second value, and it is the bet that its authors made to give soul and voice to that story. And it could not be another voice than that of children, girls and adolescents who went through treatment at the time and their families. Because his voice is the only one that can convey his courage, their capacity for resilience and their therapeutic process.

Child sexual abuse does not have to be a conviction, and the stories in this book prove it. It does not imply a sentence if the appropriate therapeutic help and accompaniment is received, in which affective warmth is understood as a condition for technical rigor. Nor is it a condemnation if you have a solid emotional support network, which is another factor that is talked about a lot in this book: the role of the support network beyond families. The stories in its pages give this book congruence and consistency.

For me it has been a privilege to coordinate and participate in the development of this book, as well as for Javier Romeo carry out the first technical review of your content. We believe that it is a necessary book and had to be written by active professionals, with the legitimacy of years of experience watching children, girls and adolescents victims of child sexual abuse. And with the soul that only three professionals like them could give their pages.

As I wrote in the prologue, “This book keeps the horror and wonder of which the human being is capable. Y, especially, the light that arises from the darkness when professional rigor is united, honesty and human warmth”. We trust that you will receive the welcome you deserve.

Manual “Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence” F. Javier Romeo

Children, and adolescents who go through the protection system have been very complicated situations, While often marks show of trauma. Fully understand the trauma, learn to identify and act protectively are professional responsibilities in any organization working on protection. So it has been an honor for me to have written this manual, Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence, which is published in the framework of a new project with SOS Children's Villages through its Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Two versions of the document:

This manual covers the basic points are collected to consider regarding four aspects:

  • The conceptualization of trauma, from the basics to current theories, with different types of trauma contemplated and the relationship between trauma and link. There is also a reflection on how the intervention own protection (the entry into the family, the removal of children, and adolescents in their homes…) It can be traumatic if performed improperly.
  • The identification of trauma from indicators, with special attention to dissociation (which it is a topic of great interest in formations, and on which there is often little awareness). Addition, is discussed in more detail the influence of the trauma in especially difficult to manage demonstrations: and behaviors aggressiveness result of sexual abuse.
  • The intervention understood holistically:
    • The detection, which can be made from any field, to derive professional specialists who can make the evaluation.
    • Intervention system level, using the tools already worked in Safe and protective environments, the Positive discipline and Aware affectivity.
    • more concrete intervention, things to do in day to day from alternative care arrangements or from community work.
    • Therapeutic intervention, that should be performed by specialists with specific training in trauma, but which may be accompanied from all levels.
  • The addressing trauma at the organizational level, with a series of guidelines for capacity development, the adequacy of systems performance against trauma in children, adolescents and institutional positioning needed to lead social change.

The process has been very interesting, and connects with previous work we have done since childhood Espirales Consulting with both the Regional Office of SOS Children's Villages for Latin America and the Caribbean to National Associations. Initial interviews and previous virtual meeting allowed me to prepare the training material I taught for three intense days of July in Asuncion, Paraguay, representatives of SOS Children's Villages twenty countries and the Regional Office. Your questions, comments and contributions, I thank from here, They have been essential to achieve the final document.

I hope you find it useful to those you work with children, and adolescents at any level, and that you can help identify the traumas around you to, as the title says, you may go “accompanying the wounds of the soul” in the recovery process.

Workshop “Focusing, body and safety: Focusing for the prevention of violence” in Madrid 11 and 12 November 2017

Raise awareness of the body as a place of protection against violence is one of my key professional priorities. In this workshop, “Focusing, body and safety: Focusing for the prevention of violence” I combine my job more than a decade dedicated to protecting children against various types of violence (the last eight years Spiral Consulting Children) with technical power Focusing, a technique that works the psychological aspects from the body dimension. In fact, when accompanied processes as psychologist and psychotherapist, Focusing is one of the pillars (If you are interested you can see the book by Ann Weiser Cornell, Focusing in clinical practice, I have translated into Spanish).

Focusing may provide a new way to create security in our lives through the body. All people we want to be treated well, with respect and consideration. But, witness violence at various levels frequently. If we are also in contact with children, and adolescents, both in our families and from our work, we see many situations of violence and ask ourselves how to prevent it. This workshop is geared to work so vivencial an operational concept of violence with an experiential base from the body. So we can identify violence from our body while we can act more clearly and protective way in our lives and in our professional field.

This workshop is aimed at people interested in learning more about how to manage violence from a safe position within the body, both personally and professionally (social intervention specialists from psychology, psychotherapy, social work, education…). Focusing prior knowledge they are not needed (although it will be an advantage). This workshop is a recognized monograph for obtaining the Diploma in Focusing of Spanish Institute of Focusing.

Workshop “Focusing and body dimension of violence” in the Day “Emotions and Psychotherapy” in Madrid 15 March 2017

Those of us who you follow while you already know our interest in body size in all affective processes, especially in hard experiences of violence. And you know how much I appreciate the Focusing as a particularly useful tool to get closer to our intelligence somatosensory. So it is for me an honor to have been invited to give a workshop on “Focusing and body dimension of violence” inside of Working Day “Emotions and psychotherapy: Challenges and Applications”, organized by the Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid.

The proposed workshop, which it is geared to professional psychotherapy, is the next:

In psychotherapy practice we see many situations of violence, from the most subtle to the most intense, and especially its consequences. This workshop offers an experiential journey through experiential exercises based on Focusing de Eugene Gendlin. In this way we can get to identify violence from the body (besides from cognitively), an essential step to increase our effectiveness in preventing, detection and intervention in cases of violence (child abuse and its effects in adulthood, sexual abuse, gender violence…).

Date: Wednesday, 15 March 2017, the 15:30 a 17:30.

Place: Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid – Icade
