Article “We accompany with the person that we are”, F. Javier Romeo, for the initiative “Renewing from within”

Portada del artículo "Acompañamos con la persona que somos" de F. Javier RomeoThe pandemic has brought us many difficult things, and I wish it hadn't happened. And even so we can use their symbols to have a greater awareness about our way of being with children, and adolescents who have suffered much, as is the case with those who live with protection measures.

The initiative “Renewing from within”, from which we already talked about its launch in May 2021, aims to offer some ideas to continue reflecting on the protection system in Spain (and can also be used for many other places). My contribution this month is article “We accompany with the person that we are”, in which I offer a series of analogies between measures against COVID-19 and the awareness we need when dealing with children, girls and adolescents with protection measures. It is aimed at professionals and families of all kinds (originally, cozy, adoptivas…).

You can read the article in the blog of “Renewing from within”, from where you can also download it in PDF.

And I would love to know if those metaphors serve you, or how would you raise them from your point of view. I will read you carefully.

“Losing forgiveness for not knowing how to look and not wanting to see” article by Pepa Horno for the BBK Family program

Image from the article on the BBK Family blogThe article that they raised me from BBK Family it was quite a challenge. Talk about the forgiveness that as families we can ask victims of child sexual abuse, to the kids, girls and adolescents who are living it and we do not know how to detect yet, and the inner child that lives within so many men and women that society did not know how to see, those he called sick, crazy and liars; sick, crazy and liars.

I've tried to talk about that shaking feeling, of emptiness, of fragility that invades us when we begin to be aware of something that we have denied, minimized or even ridiculed. And that is happening to us as a society with violence against children and especially with child sexual abuse..

Since CI Spirals we have talked a lot about this topic, how social change is a reality, that impunity for offenders is beginning to decrease and how this is the truly effective way to end any form of violence. They are not the strategies that we implement with the victims or with those who attack, but the generation of a safe and protective environment created by the people who witness or intuit it and decide to act. It is silence that makes trauma possible, as it says Begoña Aznárez, and ending that silence is an essential condition to eradicate violence.

But to break that silence, the society, families have to do a process of consciousness that hurts. That process by which teachers, when you shape them, put names and surnames, and above all they put a face to what you explain. “But I had a boy like that last year in class“, “That girl did that…”. That process that neighbors do when it is discovered that a child has been abused, or appears murdered, those who saw him play in the park, those whose children shared class with him or her. And we think of that sad look, in those dark circles, in that girl who lived in a protection center and the educators saw how she always trembled when a door was closed. The same girl who insulted them and said “pass them”. And in so many other faces that we begin to see when we learn to look.

Asking for forgiveness means honoring and naming the pain of those who have suffered. Giving it a name makes it real. That is why it is necessary and legitimate. And it carries a commitment. An option that doesn't always come, but as a society we need to break the silence.

Years ago I posted a article here in which he spoke of two phases of forgiveness: affective integration of lived experience, your acceptance, and a second, rebuilding the link. The first is part of the grieving and recovery process.. The second is a personal choice that can never be forced or set as a condition in a healing process.. Victims of child sexual abuse have the right to forgive and unforgive, and both can be protective decisions. But they should never consider forgiveness if they do not live in a trustworthy society.. Y, for the moment, we are only on the way to be.

Consciousness leads us to know how to look. And see hurts. Asking for forgiveness is the first step to being trustworthy.

“The look at the educational space: a proposal of indicators to evaluate nursery schools as safe and protective environments”: Pepa Horno's article in the Aula de Infantil magazine

The focus of protection work has changed in recent years, moving from understanding protection as the eradication of any form of violence against children, girls and adolescents to a comprehensive model that includes protection as the generation of a safe and protective environment that guarantees the full development of the child. And the full development of a child goes far beyond their right not to suffer any form of violence..

From this understanding, the look at the environment changes. The environment becomes a constitutive element of the intervention we do in any field. The intervention is a relational experience that is also determined by the place where it takes place. The place where we are gives meaning to the intervention. And that said environment is safe and protective becomes the essential condition to guarantee the protection of children, and adolescents.

Thus, from CI Spirals we have been promoting a indicator model that serve to evaluate the environments where children live, girls and adolescents to know if they are safe and protective environments, as well as to promote the changes and improvements necessary to achieve that. Their homes, the schools, the leisure spaces, the spaces of the municipality, the sport zones, health centers and hospitals, the protection homes, spaces for social intervention, the police stations or the courts, among many others, are spaces that must be evaluated from this perspective.

Portada de la Revista Aula de Infantil, 111, septiembre 2021Article “The look at the educational space: a proposal of indicators to evaluate nursery schools as safe and protective spaces” that has been published in the Aula de Infantil Magazine this September 2021, develops this system of indicators focused on nursery schools. The objective is to provide those responsible for the management and direction of nursery schools with a system of indicators that allow them to evaluate those that already exist and incorporate them into the design of those that are planned in the future..

This system of indicators generates what is most important to us: a conscious look at space as part of an inclusive and protective educational process. I hope that the article that we disseminate today can be a useful tool to generate that look.

Project “Renewing from within”

Portada del documento "Renovando desde dentro"Sometimes life brings unexpected gifts.

At the beginning of the pandemic we were invited to participate in a group of people who have been cause for hope in these difficult times. Alberto Rodríguez and Javier Múgica took the initiative, and they invited us to the rest: Antonio Ferrandis, Marta Llauradó, Javier Soriano Romeu and, from CI Spirals, although in a personal capacity, Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo Biedermann. It is a group of people involved with the welfare of children, girls and adolescents who are in the protection system in Spain. What started as a series of online chats eventually evolved into an informal working group. And a year later we have the honor of presenting the results in a document that we have written collaboratively. We present them Renewing from within. Seven challenges and proposals to improve the child protection system in Spain.

And we invite you to download them The document, to read it and to send comments, ideas and proposals. Since the official website of the initiative we will continue to expand each of the proposals over the next few months. See you on that website.

With hope and awareness,

Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo

“Psychic trauma belongs to everyone”, new book by Begoña Aznarez with the foreword by Pepa Horno

Portada del libro "El trauma psíquico es de todos" Aznárez BegoñaOne of the pillars of the CI Spirals philosophy since its creation was the construction of networks. Link people, to professional teams with each other. The network is a security condition, legitimacy and technical rigor as well as human care.

Since that construction of networks we have met extraordinary people and professionals that we have admired. And life in some cases has offered me the privilege of being able to generate a deep emotional bond with some of them.. And so you don't just admire them professionally, but you love them. Begoña Aznárez is one of those examples.

Begoña is a therapist who is creating a school. Not just for the people you serve, but through all the professionals he is training and accompanying from the Spanish Society of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychology (SEMPyP). It has an unusual characteristic in our guild which is the ability to make complex things simple., to explain in a simple way the great technical concepts of psychology. In this way, manages to make them close and understandable not only for professionals, but for families and children, girls and adolescents with whom we work. His human congruence and his ability to structure the therapeutic process are unique. The book Psychic trauma belongs to everyone is a perfect example of this ability. In it, he develops a technical model for dealing with trauma in childhood and adolescence, shaping it into a series of lessons.. But it goes further, making children's trauma visible, girls and adolescents as a community responsibility. Hence its title.

The concept of “trauma” It is essential for any professional who wants to work with rigor and technical updating in the field of protection. The knowledge and advances that trauma psychology has entailed in the intervention requires professionals who want to carry out their work efficiently to train on trauma. From Espirales CI we are promoting this training and a whole series of materials on this subject, starting with the manual Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence what has developed F. Javier Romeo. That is why receiving a book like the one published this week by Begoña is a gift.

But the gift was double. Because Begoña asked me to write the foreword to this book. An honor for me as a professional, but above all as a person. So I end this post by literally transcribing the prologue that I wrote, in the confidence that it encourages you to read a book that gives light far beyond the professional.

The prologue goes like this:

“Those of us who work with people know that the effectiveness of what we do depends not so much on what we do as on the way we do it. It is to a large extent the way in which we carry out our work that marks its effectiveness. The better professional is not the one who knows the most, but the one who is able to find a simple and clear way of explaining the processes and approaching them effectively.. All the more so when it comes to the human soul and its pain.

There are many of us who have been waiting for this book for years. Longing for Begoña to find enough time and peace to write it. Because she combines that "what" with a luminous "how". But his patients always went before, each soul and its history, each trauma and its imprint, each boy or girl and their magic.

Begoña is one of the best professionals I have ever met. José Luis [Marin] would say, in that polarized style that Begoña likes so much, which is the best. And she has been a teacher and guide to more professionals than she can imagine.. That is why writing this foreword is in itself an honor and a gift.. She knows that I have dedicated my professional life to giving a voice to people whose trauma stories have made them mute., to break that silence of which he speaks from the beginning. And it was partly thanks to her.

But Begoña is something else: she is a magician and flies. That is why when you start reading the pages of this book you get a feeling of disbelief.. It seems impossible to describe the complex in such a simple way and to name suffering in such a bright and courageous way.. When you advance in its reading you will realize that its pages are leaving you without excuses: as a therapist to incorporate their technical proposal into your work and as a person to watch or revisit your own narrative.

It is quite a challenge that Begoña proposes: talk about trauma both to people outside the psychotherapeutic field but who know the trauma (conscious or unconsciously) and will be recognized in many passages of the book as professionals of psychology and medicine. She says it clear: "What heals is the bond". And through the pages she guides us sensitively, synchrony and presence.

This book generates explicit semantic memory on more than one level. And it mentalizes the intuitions and “gut” sensations that many of us have had throughout our professional career.. Break the silence. And for those of us who have had the privilege of listening to Begoña in training sessions or conferences, it is quite a re-experiment, almost like listening to her. These pages develop a therapeutic approach to intervening with people with stories of trauma.. There is little literature that describes the technical models of intervention in such a way that they can be generalized. We need to ensure that psychology and medicine professionals are able to read the history of trauma behind the emotional symptoms, behavioral and somatic. That conscious gaze that allows you to see the horror, fear and the courage of survival.

Because let me finish this prologue by choosing my lesson. I choose the 48. The vacuum, the horror, the value, healing. I have rarely read a summary that better honors all the people who have found their unique way, own and brave to heal your trauma history. And the light that comes to us when in the lesson 52 speaks to us of that "healthy and wise bond with ourselves"… that we see appear in the soul, the eyes, people's actions and smiles in the therapeutic context. The one that gives meaning to what we do. That what, hopefully, we achieve with our inner child”.

Little more can I add. Except, again: thanks, Begoña.
