Happy 2022

Clouds keep storms but also life.

This 2021 it has been a year in which sometimes it has been necessary to make an effort to remember the sun and the moon behind the clouds. That light that comes from the affective network and consciousness.

Thank you all for being part of our light. We wish you a 2022 full of affection, strength and awareness.

Coffee with author on “Metaphors for consciousness”

Last 3 November 2021 I had the opportunity to meet again at the Café con Autor talks promoted by the Editorial Descle Brouwer and energizes Bruno Moioli to talk about the last book I published: Metaphors for consciousness.

And sometimes it happens that an encounter is significant, special for some reason. With this book it is happening from the beginning because everything we organize around it ends up acquiring that depth. Metaphors for consciousness was born with the vocation of being a gift book, a book that you want to spread and share, that one is born to give to people who love well. It's a small book, easy to read. But in a way it deceives, because each phrase is thought and each illustration of Zaida escobar it enters your soul. I wrote it as a gift, and since we published it, is being a gift to me.

With this meeting it happened, and it ended up being a moving space. So I think it deserves to be seen. So I take advantage of the fact that it is already posted in an open format so that you can spread it from here. Hope you like it.

Good Treatment Award for Children Dr. Pedro Gómez Bosque from the REA Association for Pepa Horno

Today I write to thank the REA Association for the honor of granting me the Good Treatment Award for Children Dr. Pedro Gomez Bosque 2021.

I have always felt privileged in my work because two things happen in it that do not usually happen easily in other professional fields. On the one hand, you receive the “echoes” from your work. Many people write to me, They stop me on the street or come up to me at the end of a course or a conference to tell me what my work, my courses or my books have meant in their lives. When they do I stay quiet and excited, I hug them because I can't find another way to explain how important those little gestures are to me. They make the privilege double, not only does your work make sense but you can see it first hand. And the meaning is the best possible: welfare, the conscience and peace of mind of the people I work with directly and of the children, girls and adolescents who, one way or another, are under your charge.

And the second wonderful thing that happens in my work is that you can see the best of the human being. Over the years working with people who suffer and with teams that hold the soul of children in their hands, girls and adolescents who suffer, I have met extraordinary people. Many people ask me how I can work in this area where, definitely, it looks the most horrible face of what the human being is capable of doing. And the reason is that it also looks the most beautiful. I see it in the faces of the boys and girls, of people in general when you alleviate their suffering in some way, when you see its value, their courage and their beauty beyond the damage they have experienced. But I also see it in that immense network of people that I have met in all countries fighting to change things.. People who are moved to tears by the pain of children, girls and adolescents they care for and are able to understand that crying as a sign of emotional strength and professional rigor. People who build networks, networks that change the lives of people and communities. They are my reason for hope. Not a utopian reason, because it is woven from scraps of reality.

The board of directors of the REA association are part of that network. They are one of those people who do not give up. People who can dedicate themselves to something else, they choose to spend their time, your knowledge, his soul and his resources to promote the good treatment of childhood and adolescence. People who make me feel accompanied on this path that can sometimes be so inhospitable. Of those that remind me that it makes sense and makes me a better professional and a better person.

But in an award there is something more. And it is that the recognition comes to you publicly. It's not just that personal email, or that call, or that person who stops you on the street. It is that they choose you to give you public recognition of your work. And that public election seems to me an immense gift and an honor that I hope to deserve..

Therefore, although I have already told you in private, go from here publicly my thanks.

A touched hug,

Pepa Horno

Article “Defining consciousness” by Pepa Horno for the initiative “Renewing from within”

One of the pillars of the CI Spirals philosophy is the generation of networks. Networking makes you grow as a professional and as a person. But then there are networks and networks. From time to time you get the gift of being in a work group with professionals whom you often feel are better than you., professionals who challenge you, they drive you, urge you. Over the years I have learned that they not only have to be professionals who I admire for their professional level. They have to be people who I admire for their human qualities, its warmth, his honesty and something even rarer: for their ability to be generous with their time and knowledge. How difficult it is to find professionals who share what they do and how they do it, that they understand that sharing as we understand it in CI Spirals, as our way of bringing back to life as much as we have received.

The group of professionals “Renewing from within” is included among this group of professionals, those that make me a better person and a better professional. Because then we started talking and, like nothing, you end up committing to a little madness, nothing more and nothing less, to try to define what it is “consciousness”. That word mantra that has become the cornerstone of our professional intervention, but also from my look at the human being and his possibility of change from freedom.

So here I share the link to the article that has resulted from that challenge. It is called “Defining consciousness”. I have tried to develop the indicators that I use to differentiate a look, a conscious intervention in the educational role, foster or care. Indicators that can also be used in a process of improvement of professional quality and organizational change.

I hope I don't come off too badly off the result. And above all, as always, I hope it can be useful to you.

Publication “Voices for change. Methodological guide for consulting children, girls and adolescents who are in residential care” by Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo for UNICEF Spain

Portada de la guía "Voces para el cambio", by Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo, for UNICEF Spain

The modification that was made of the Law of Protection of Children in Spain with the approval of the law 16/2015, later reinforced by Law 8/2021, the 4 June, of Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against violence represents a challenge for the protection system in many ways. But there is one especially relevant: guarantee the full implementation of the right to participation of children, girls and adolescents under protection measures. A challenge in which very significant progress has been made in recent years, but that is still far from being a reality.

Phone Voices for change. Methodological guide for consulting children, girls and adolescents in residential care, published by UNICEF Spain, aims to be a methodological instrument to achieve this challenge. Its objective is to propose a methodology to carry out consultations with children, girls and adolescents in residential care. A methodology that considers the specificities of this population in order to guarantee legitimate participatory processes, meaningful and protective. A methodology that raises the consultations as one more element in a process of internal transformation of the protection homes until reaching a greater degree of protagonism of the boys and girls over their own lives.. And a methodology that can then be adapted to different query objects.

But above all it aims to provide a tool to professionals, entities and institutions of the protection system that decide to evaluate their work to increase its rigor and quality. Children, girls and adolescents are the recipients of the work of the protection system. Therefore, any evaluation process, improvement or quality that you want to promote will not be legitimate if it is not part of the needs assessment and proposals for improvement that the children themselves, girls and adolescents carry out.

Sometimes you don't wonder because you don't know how. Sometimes because you are afraid of the answer. The guide we have developed Pepa Horno and F. Javier Romeo aims to remove the first of the two obstacles. Winning the second is already an institutional and professional decision of the protection system in each autonomous community, and the management and educational team of each foster home.

Here we have the recording of the session:

We hope that the guide will be useful and that you will find us at the presentation.

Article “We accompany with the person that we are”, F. Javier Romeo, for the initiative “Renewing from within”

Portada del artículo "Acompañamos con la persona que somos" de F. Javier RomeoThe pandemic has brought us many difficult things, and I wish it hadn't happened. And even so we can use their symbols to have a greater awareness about our way of being with children, and adolescents who have suffered much, as is the case with those who live with protection measures.

The initiative “Renewing from within”, from which we already talked about its launch in May 2021, aims to offer some ideas to continue reflecting on the protection system in Spain (and can also be used for many other places). My contribution this month is article “We accompany with the person that we are”, in which I offer a series of analogies between measures against COVID-19 and the awareness we need when dealing with children, girls and adolescents with protection measures. It is aimed at professionals and families of all kinds (originally, cozy, adoptivas…).

You can read the article in the blog of “Renewing from within”, from where you can also download it in PDF.

And I would love to know if those metaphors serve you, or how would you raise them from your point of view. I will read you carefully.

F. Javier Romeo
