Manual “Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence” F. Javier Romeo

Children, and adolescents who go through the protection system have been very complicated situations, While often marks show of trauma. Fully understand the trauma, learn to identify and act protectively are professional responsibilities in any organization working on protection. So it has been an honor for me to have written this manual, Accompanying the wounds of the soul. Trauma in childhood and adolescence, which is published in the framework of a new project with SOS Children's Villages through its Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Two versions of the document:

This manual covers the basic points are collected to consider regarding four aspects:

  • The conceptualization of trauma, from the basics to current theories, with different types of trauma contemplated and the relationship between trauma and link. There is also a reflection on how the intervention own protection (the entry into the family, the removal of children, and adolescents in their homes…) It can be traumatic if performed improperly.
  • The identification of trauma from indicators, with special attention to dissociation (which it is a topic of great interest in formations, and on which there is often little awareness). Addition, is discussed in more detail the influence of the trauma in especially difficult to manage demonstrations: and behaviors aggressiveness result of sexual abuse.
  • The intervention understood holistically:
    • The detection, which can be made from any field, to derive professional specialists who can make the evaluation.
    • Intervention system level, using the tools already worked in Safe and protective environments, the Positive discipline and Aware affectivity.
    • more concrete intervention, things to do in day to day from alternative care arrangements or from community work.
    • Therapeutic intervention, that should be performed by specialists with specific training in trauma, but which may be accompanied from all levels.
  • The addressing trauma at the organizational level, with a series of guidelines for capacity development, the adequacy of systems performance against trauma in children, adolescents and institutional positioning needed to lead social change.

The process has been very interesting, and connects with previous work we have done since childhood Espirales Consulting with both the Regional Office of SOS Children's Villages for Latin America and the Caribbean to National Associations. Initial interviews and previous virtual meeting allowed me to prepare the training material I taught for three intense days of July in Asuncion, Paraguay, representatives of SOS Children's Villages twenty countries and the Regional Office. Your questions, comments and contributions, I thank from here, They have been essential to achieve the final document.

I hope you find it useful to those you work with children, and adolescents at any level, and that you can help identify the traumas around you to, as the title says, you may go “accompanying the wounds of the soul” in the recovery process.

“Promotion of safe and protective environments” and “Conscious Affectivity as Professional Competence”: two guides created for SOS Children’s Villages (SOS Children's Villages) in Latin America and the Caribbean

Developing in environments that provide and ensure protection, as well as in spaces that include their particularities and allow them to grow in an integral manner with warm and affectionate coexistence are vital rights for children, adolescents and the youth. That is why protective environments are the main condition for the child’s full development and for the full implementation of children’s rights in every area of their lives. Any organization or institution working with children (alternative care centres, educational centres, schools, hospitals…) should ensure the promotion of safe environments to ensure child care and protection.

The manual Promotion of safe and protective environments at SOS Children’s Villages in Latin America and the Caribbean has been created by Espirales CI for SOS Children´s Villages Regional Office (click here to read the original in Spanish, Promoting safe and protective environments in SOS Children's Villages in Latin America and the Caribbean). It has been developed to create an evaluation system of indicators to know if an environment is a protective environment or not. It can be used to evaluate the environments in which children are already living or to design new environments. And it is based on four levels:

  • Level 1: a protective and safe physical environment.
  • Level 2: a protective and safe emotional environment.
  • Level 3: the team, conscious adults that provide and maintain the protective and safe environment.
  • Level 4: the prominence of the people living in the environment, including the prominence of children and young people.

But an environment will never be a protective environment if it is not a warm and affective environment. And the duty of creating this warmth belongs to adults in charge of children: the team. So, to ensure the level 3 of protective environments we need to promote the Conscious Affectivity as a Professional Competence. Any professional working with people, specially working with people who are suffering and over all, children who are suffering, need to be affective with them to make them feel safe and cared for. In this way they will recover integrally, and, talking about children, we will ensure their best development. Conscious affectivity is a professional competence and part of the professional duties working in any protection area.

The manual Conscious affection as an organizacional competence at SOS Children´s Villages in Latin America and the Caribbean is a guide to promote conscious affectivity as professional competence in any institution or organization that works with children (click here to read the original in Spanish, Conscious affectivity and organizational competence in SOS Children's Villages Latin America and the Caribbean). The competence is developed in five abilities:

  • Affection that is expressed in a way that it can be perceived and received by each person, child or adult.
  • The ability to create positive affection bonds and to keep consciousness regarding the already created affective bonds.
  • A conscious care of planning and development of all phases of the intervention process, with special attention to beginnings and endings.
  • A conscious and respectful look at the person one works with.
  • Addressing situations of conflict from a positive discipline perspective.

Both guides have been a long process of systematization of two key concepts from the child protection perspective. It is not only necessary to understand the importance of the ideas, it is necessary to give tools, indicators and evaluation processes in order to facilitate their implementation.

We want to thank SOS Children´s Villages Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Office, Child Protection Regional Network and the Human Resources Regional Network for their confidence in our work and their essential contribution to these two strategic guides.

We hope that these guides will be interesting and useful for any organization, institution or professional working with people who need to be safe and cared for.

Materials for the Campaign “Child Sexual Abuse Stays Offside” for the prevention and detection of child sexual abuse in sports

This entry is a version with the English-language materials Original entry into Spanish, you can read https://www.espiralesci.es/materiales-de-la-campana-el-abuso-sexual-infantil-queda-fuera-de-juego/

Child sexual abuse is a reality that affects children and adolescents in several domains of their life. And also in sports.

Therefore, it is for both of us, F. Javier Romeo and Pepa Horno, a big satisfaction our elaboration of the materials of the Campaign “Child Sexual Abuse Stays Offside” (in Spanish “Child sexual abuse is out of play” #abusofueradejuego), a campaign for the prevention and detection of child sexual abuse in sports coordinated by the Spanish High Council for Sports (Sports Council) and Youth Sports Foundation.

It has been a long process that has involved getting to know the experiences of sportsmen and sportswomen and of professionals that work in the domain of sports. We have discovered the specificities of the world of sports, both in its most protective aspects and in its risk factors, combined with our experience of de detection and prevention of child sexual abuse in other domains. We have found very useful our conversations with specific people and the collaboration of the wonderful monitoring team gathered by the Spanish High Council for Sports and Fundación Deporte Joven, that has counted with professionals from the UNICEF Spanish Committee, the Council of Europe and the non-profit organisation for protection in sports “air, Silver and Bronze” (“Gold, Silver and Bronze”). Their inputs and comments have helped us to adapt the messages to each level of intervention in sports.

The English version of these materials has been prepared by Victoria Kennedy and F. Javier Romeo.

The campaign, that is identified by the hashtag #abusofueradejuego #AbuseStaysOffside, has several materials that can be downloaded directly from the website of the campaign:

  • Three activity guides for the prevention of child sexual abuse for coaches and physical education teachers, that offer guidelines for introducing the ten key ideas through prevention activities that can be done during trainings. They are adapted to three groups:

The key messages are summarized in the hand post and in the bookmarks that can be used with children and adolescents.

Ages 3 to 6 Ages 7 to 12 Ages 13 to 17

All in all, these materials provide a big picture of the diverse aspects that need to be tackled in trainings, matches, competitions and environments in order to reduce child sexual abuse and to detect it quickly when it happens. In that way we can achieve the goal of ensuring that when children and adolescents practice sports, they grow and develop their best abilities while they rest protected and safe.

We hope that you will find them interesting and, above all, useful.

“Addiction and child sexual abuse: Key for protection”, contribution made by Pepa Horno to book Rafael Guerrero “education and emotional attachment”

One goal of this blog is to spread those books, research, materials or references that may be useful for professionals working with families and children, and adolescents. The book education and emotional attachment. Practical guidelines to manage emotions at home and in the classroom the Rafael Guerrero, published by Editorial Planeta in your collection “books Dome”, It is one of them.

The construct of attachment has generated a line of work, intervention and research in psychology. But, one of its basic difficulty is that professionals know to explain to families. It remains a challenge for many to be able to explain the concept and give concrete guidance to families to enable them to generate positive linkages with children, and adolescents.

A book like this can be a very valuable tool for families and educators face to understand the role of emotions in child development, Nina your teen. Also to develop specific guidelines that allow them to incorporate emotional education in an effective way in their daily routines.

It is my pleasure to have contributed a small part of this book, with a specific chapter on “Addiction and child sexual abuse: Key for protection” that, following the same goal the rest of the book, It aims to provide families and educators, very reduced form, some keys that allow an understanding of the preventive role of the attachment on child sexual abuse.

Since we want to thank CI Espirales Rafael Guerrero Yet the Editorial Planeta the opportunity they have given us to spread the chapter from this blog, and contribute to the dissemination of a book that seems as relevant as accurate in its approach and the issues addressed.
